Laos is an inland country located in the northern part of the Indochina Peninsula, bordering China to the north, Cambodia to the south, Vietnam to the east, Myanmar to the northwest, and Thailand to the southwest. The country has an area of 236,800 square kilometers and a population of 7 million (2018), with Vientiane as its capital. It joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in July 1997. Laos is the only inland country in Southeast Asia, mainly relying on road and rail transportation;

The total mileage of Laos' highways is about 47,000 kilometers, carrying 80% of passenger and cargo volume;

The China-Laos Railway was founded in December 2015, started construction in December 2016, and completed in 2021 and start running in Dec 2021, the railway with 422KM is expected to boost cargo traffic and trades.

As of 2024, it is the most significant Belt and Road Initiative project in Laos.
